むかし ある ところ に、 とても こころ の やさしい
おじいさん と、 おばあさん が いました。
ある 日 の こと です。
「ばあさん や、 ちょっくら 山 へ いって、
しば を かって くる よ。」
おじいさん は そう いって、 いえ の
うら に ある 山 へ、 でかけて
いきました。

むかし ある ところ に、
Long ago in some place,
とても こころ の やさしい おじいさん と、 おばあさん が いました。
there was and old man and old woman with very gentle hearts.
ある 日 の こと です。
It happened one day.
「ばあさん や、 ちょっくら 山 へ いって、
"Old woman, I am going to the mountain for a little while,
しば を かって くる よ。」
to cut firewood."
おじいさん は そう いって、
The old man said,
いえ の うら に ある 山 へ、 でかけて いきました。
and went out to the mountain that was behind the house.

「デンガショツ、 デンガショツ。」
むこう の 林（はやし） の なか から、 おかしな
こえ が きこえて きました。
「はて？ なん じゃろう。 みょうな
こえ じゃ な。」

おじいさん が しば を かって いる と、
When the old man was cutting firewood,
「デンガショツ、 デンガショツ。」
"denkashou, denkashou." (just a sound)
むこう の 林（はやし） の なか から、
From within the woods over there,
おかしな こえ が きこえて きました。
a strange voice came to be heard.
「はて？ なん じゃろう。
"What!? What would that be.
みょうな こえ じゃ な。」
It is a strange voice!"

おじいさん は ふしぎに おもい ながら、
そっと しげみ を わけて、 林 の なか へ
はいって いきました。

and went in towards the interior of the woods.

やせた ねずみ と ふとった ねずみ が
すもう を とって いました。

And then, in a small clearing,
まるい どひょう を つくって、
there was made a round sumou ring,
やせた ねずみ と ふとった ねずみ が すもう を とって いました。
a slender mouse and a fat mouse were doing sumou.

おじいさん は、 木 の かげ に かくれて、
ぐっと め を こらしました。

"Ho!, this is interesting."
おじいさん は、 木 の かげ に かくれて、
The old man hid himself behind a tree and,
ぐっと め を こらしました。
strained his eyes very much to see.

The skinny mouse, is the mouse from the old man's house.
ふとった ねずみ は、
The fat mouse,
村（むら） の ちょうじゃ の いえ の ねずみ です。
is from the house of the millionaire from the village.

ちょうじゃ、長者 = a millionaire, a billionaire

「おら とこ の ねずみ や。 それっ、
がんばれ。 がんばれ。」
おじいさん は、 いっしょうけんめい
おうえん を しました。

「おら とこ の ねずみ や。
"The mouse from my place!
それっ、 がんばれ。 がんばれ。」
Oh! do your best. Do your best"
おじいさん は、 いっしょうけんめい おうえん を しました。
The old man cheered as much as he could.

力（ちから） が よわくて、 どうにも なりません。
なんど やって も、 スポン スッポン と、
なげとばされて しまいます。
おじいさん は、 じぶん の いえ の やせた
ねずみ が かわいそうに なりました。

けれども、 おじいさん の いえ の ねずみ は、
However, the mouse from the old man's house,
力（ちから） が よわくて、 どうにも なりません。
power is weak, there is no help for it.
なんど やって も、 スポン スッポン と、
No matter how many times he did, "spon, sppon" (flinging away sound),
なげとばされて しまいます。
he was completely flung away.
おじいさん は、
The old man,
じぶん の いえ の やせた ねずみ が かわいそうに なりました。
came to feel sorry for his own home's skinny mouse.

かかって いって も、 スポン スッポン なげられて、
どろ だらけ に なって な。 力 が でる ように
して やり たい が、 うち は びんぼう で
おいしい たべもの など ない し な。」
おじいさん は、 ふうっ と いき を
はきました。

いえ に かえって くる と、
When he returned home,
おじいさん は おばあさん に ねずみ の はなし を しました。
the old man told the old woman the story of the mouse.
「かわいそうで な。
"It is sad.
わし は、 なみだ が でた わ。
My tears go out from me.
いくら かかって いって も、
No matter how many times he attacks,
スポン スッポン なげられて、
'spon, sppon' he is flung,
どろ だらけ に なって な。
he becomes covered with dirt.
力 が でる ように して やり たい が、
I want to make an effort to give power,
うち は びんぼう で おいしい たべもの など ない し な。」
because my house is poor, there is no delicious food."
おじいさん は、 ふうっ と いき を はきました。
The old man sighed, letting out a deep breath.

そこで ふたり は、 お正月（おしょうがつ） の ため に だいじに
しまって ある おこめ を たいて、 おもち を
つきました。

「それでは、 おもち を ついて、 だべさせて やりましょう。」
"Then, I will pound rice cakes, and we will feed him."
と、 いいました。
she said.
そこで ふたり は、

お正月（おしょうがつ） の ため に だいじに しまって ある おこめ を
たいて、
cooked the precious rice that they had stored away for new years,
おもち を つきました。
they made rice cakes.

"Sa, I will keep this here for later.
たくさん たべて な、 力 を つける ん だ よ。」
Eating a lot adds to the power you know."
おじいさん と おばあさん は、
The old man and old woman,
おもち を だんご に まるめて、
rounded the rice cakes into dumplings,
ねずみ が よく かお を だす たな の 上 に おきました。
and put them on the shelf where the mouse often appears.

おじいさん は よろこび ながら、 また 山 へ でかけて
いきました。 そして、 しば を かって いる と、
「デンカショッ、 デンカショッ。」
きのう と おなじ ように、 ねずみ たち の
かけごえ が きこえて きました。
「おう、 おう。 やっとる。 やっとる。」
おじいさん は、 にこにこ 林（はやし） の
なか へ はいって いきました。

つぎ の 日 の あさ、 おもち は ぜんぶ なくなって いました。
The morning of the next day, all of the rice cakes were gone.
「よし、 よし。 これで、 うんと 力 が ついた だろう。」
"Good, good. By this, he will have added a lot of power."
おじいさん は よろこび ながら、 また 山 へ でかけて いきました。
While feeling happy, the old man went out again to the mountain.
The old man happily went out again to the mountain.
そして、 しば を かって いる と、
And then, when he was cutting firewood,
「デンカショッ、 デンカショッ。」
"Denkansho, denkansho."
きのう と おなじ ように、
In the same manner as yesterday,
ねずみ たち の かけごえ が きこえて きました。
the shouts of the mice came to be heard.
「おう、 おう。 やっとる。 やっとる。」
"Oh, oh. They are doing. They are doing."
おじいさん は、 にこにこ 林（はやし） の なか へ はいって いきました。
The old man entered the interior of the woods with a smile.
